Qualifying
The first big one
One of the first cars out in Q1, he crashed heavily at the final chicane on his flying lap and brought out the red flag. He started from the back.
cost: back of the grid [1]The Yuki Tsunoda spin & crash log
Yuki Tsunoda is fast, funny and famously honest on the radio. He also has a habit of finding the wall at Imola. This is a friendly, sourced log of every spin and solo crash we could verify, from his rookie season to his Red Bull days.
Only incidents of his own making count here: a spin, a lost rear, a kiss with the wall. Collisions with other cars are not in the main log; spins caused by someone else are in Spin Assist.
One of the first cars out in Q1, he crashed heavily at the final chicane on his flying lap and brought out the red flag. He started from the back.
cost: back of the grid [1]In wet conditions he spun without any contact. Add a five-second penalty for track limits and he finished outside the points, with Gasly seventh in the sister car.
cost: points [1]"Not acceptable. Really not acceptable."Tsunoda on his two mistakes in two days, via RaceFans [1]
A crash in Q3 caused a red flag. The race went much better: seventh place.
cost: a better grid slot [2]He spun early in Q1 and brought out the red flag, leaving him at the very back of the grid. He finished 13th.
cost: grid position [3]Fresh from an eight-lap defence against Lewis Hamilton, he spun on the power at the exit of Turn 1 on lap 22. He had been on course for points and dropped behind Vettel, Ocon and Giovinazzi, finishing 14th.
cost: points [4]"The spin ruined my whole race, so it's a shame."Tsunoda, via The Race [4]
He hit the wall in qualifying but still made it into Q2. Monaco forgives nobody, but it forgave him a little.
cost: a scuffed car [2]Starting from the back after an engine penalty, he locked up on the pit exit on lap 48 and crashed at Turn 2, bringing out the safety car.
cost: DNF [5]No solo spins or crashes that we could verify. 2023 did have plenty of contact with other cars, and one spin courtesy of someone else (see Spin Assist).
He spun in sprint qualifying and still made it out of SQ1. A spin with no cost: rare.
cost: none [6]A heavy crash in Q3. He bounced back to score points in ninth.
cost: a long night for the mechanics [2]He crashed out of qualifying and started at the back. The race lasted one lap: contact with Albon at the start.
cost: back of the grid [2]Early in his Red Bull stint, on his first flying lap in Q1 he hit the apex kerb at the entry to the Villeneuve chicane, lost the rear and went backwards into the tyre barrier. The car climbed the barrier and rolled before landing in the gravel. He walked away. The rebuild meant a pit-lane start, and he still recovered to tenth.
cost: one RB21, pit-lane start [9] [2]"I put myself into the wall with such a stupid mistake."Tsunoda after qualifying, via GrandPrix247 [10]
2026: no race seat, but one start as a stand-in for Racing Bulls at the Dutch Grand Prix, where he finished 11th. No spin. [2] [11]
Not every pirouette was self-made. These don't count towards the total.
After a safety-car restart, contact from Kevin Magnussen spun him around; he retired.
[2]Not a spin at all. With a car problem, he pulled over and loosened his belts, then was told to carry on and drove to the pits with his belts undone. The stewards gave him a reprimand. [12]
This log counts 13 solo spins and crashes from 2021 to 2025, across qualifying, sprint qualifying and races. Spins caused by other drivers and ordinary collisions are not counted.
Nobody knows, but the numbers don't lie: a qualifying crash and a race spin in 2021, and the barrel roll in qualifying in 2025. Three of the thirteen.
Imola 2025 qualifying: backwards into the tyre barrier at the Villeneuve chicane, onto the barrier and over. He walked away, started from the pit lane and finished tenth.
In 2026 he is test and reserve driver for Red Bull and Racing Bulls, after losing his race seat to Isack Hadjar. He raced once in 2026, as a stand-in at the Dutch GP (11th).
A little, and with love. Every driver spins; few do it with as much radio commentary. The good days are on here too.
Probably. We only list incidents we could confirm in a published source. Practice-session spins are not tracked (yet).
